What You Need To Know About The Strawberry PRH Program

On April 30, 2021, the USDA’s Risk Management (RMA) announced that the Production and Revenue History (PRH) Insurance Program for strawberries would be available in certain California counties, starting with the Summer 2021 plantings. The PRH Crop Insurance Program was developed for specialty crop producers, offering them the chance to receive more accurate, personalized coverage based on both production and revenue.

Unlike previous strawberry programs, the strawberry PRH program offers producers the choice between three unique types of protection, Yield Protection, Revenue Protection, and Revenue Plus Protection.  A producer’s guarantee is based upon his historical “in-field” value. Coverage levels range from 50-85%, and Catastrophic coverage is now available under a Yield policy.

For California, the PRH program includes the following planting periods:

  • Summer Planting: Fresno and Merced counties – July 1, 2021 Deadline
  • Winter Planting: Monterey and Santa Cruz counties – September 30, 2021 Deadline
  • Winter and Summer Planting: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties – July 1, 2021 Deadline
